{"id":74,"date":"2006-10-19T05:50:02","date_gmt":"2006-10-18T21:50:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rogerdennis.com\/ideaport\/?p=74"},"modified":"2006-10-19T05:50:51","modified_gmt":"2006-10-18T21:50:51","slug":"the-impact-of-digitalisation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.rogerdennis.com\/ideaport\/?p=74","title":{"rendered":"The impact of digitalisation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was listening to a <a href=\"http:\/\/osc.gigavox.com\/shows\/detail994.html\">podcast by Marc Andreessen <\/a>(Co-Founder of Netscape) in which he discusses the history of programming.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/assets.gigavox.com\/showimages\/994.jpg\" alt=\"He's smiling because he made a hell of a lot of money...\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a bit of a geek out, but he makes some interesting points :<\/p>\n<p>1. Programming tools are no longer made for machines, they&#8217;re made for programmers.  this makes them really easy to learn how to use.<br \/>\n2. Servers are now a commodity, and the number of servers sold has increased incredibly over the last five years<br \/>\n3. Bandwidth prices are still plummeting<br \/>\n4. Open source tools mean that the barriers to entry have disappeared (from a cost point of view) when it comes to building web applications<\/p>\n<p>What does this mean?<\/p>\n<p>In a world where many businesses are now becoming digitalised to some extent, and almost everyone is trying to interact in a cheaper and smarter way with their customers (usually online in some shape or form), the next disruption to your business might not be from your competitor.<\/p>\n<p>It might come from a self-taught kid in Brazil who has unintentionally designed something which is going to kill your business.<\/p>\n<p>Think of the barriers which were around when Andreessen formed Netscape.  Or when Shawn Fanning wrote the code for Naptser.<\/p>\n<p>Now think of how many of those barriers has gone.
